This story, taken from the intimate history of the life of Napoleon, forms a remarkably interesting drama. Bonaparte and Pichegru were fast friends, but ultimately Bonaparte's regard for Pichegru turned to hatred, owing to some slight on the latter's part. In consequence, Napoleon orders his old friend's arrest, and the Emperor's minions depart upon their unwelcome mission. Pichegru, however, is a wily individual, and succeeds in eluding his captors' hands for a long time, passing through various exciting and hairbreadth escapes. Ultimately, however, be is captured and wounded, brought into the presence of Bonaparte, who, standing over his prostrate form, condemns him to death.
