Qing liang si zhong sheng

1945年8月，日寇无条件投降。羊角大娘（丁一饰）在回村的路上捡到一个弃婴，从包裹婴儿的衣服上看，这应是一个日本小孩，犹豫再三，她还是把他抱回了家。村里乡亲和家人处于对日寇的痛恨，坚决反对她收养这个敌国婴儿，但人性善良的羊角大娘最终留下了他，取名狗娃，当孙子养着。渐渐长大的狗娃善解人意，他把羊角大娘的哑巴儿子葫芦（尤勇饰）视为父亲，不料葫芦在一次筑路事故中遇难，无奈之下狗娃被送给无儿无女的牛金川（祝士彬饰）。再后来，日渐年迈的大娘为给女儿秀秀（李婷饰）换回一笔出嫁的彩礼，把狗娃送给了清凉寺。二十年后，随国家佛教代表团出访的明镜法师（濮存新饰）到达日本，大岛和子（栗原小卷饰）从那根腰带上认出了眼前的明镜法师就是自已失散了几十年的儿子......

After the defeat of Japan in WWII, a Japanese infant was abandoned in China during the chaotic evacuation out of China. An impoverished Chinese family found the infant and raised him as their own through series of tragedy and hardships. In a parallel storyline, decades later, the grown up infant, now a renowned Buddhist master, visits Japan as a leading member of a Buddhism delegation, unknowingly meets and reacquaints with his birth mother.
