At the Edge of the World

Die Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, kurz Sea Shepherd, ist eine militante Umweltschutzorganisation, die sich besonders dem Schutz der Meere und dem Kampf gegen den Walfang, die Robbenjagd sowie gegen unverhältnismäßige Fischerei verschrieben hat. Sea Shepherd ist eine Stiftung und finanziert sich durch Spenden. Die Stiftung wurde 1977 von Paul Watson gegründet, einem der ersten Mitglieder von Greenpeace. Diese Dokumentation zeigt die 3. Antarktische Kampagne. Begleitet von einem Filmteam wird der bewundernswerte und gefährliche Einsatz gegen eine japanische Walfangflotte gezeigt. Ohne Rücksicht auf persönliche Verluste setzt sich die internationale Mannschaft freiwilliger Helfer für die unermüdliche Vertreibung von Walfängern und den damit verbundenen Schutz von Meerestieren ein.

The documentary follows the events that took place during ''Operation Leviathan'' in early 2007. The RV Farley Mowat, captained by Paul Watson and the newly acquired MY Steve Irwin, captained by Alex Cornelissen meet in the Southern Ocean. As they are docked side to side, material is transferred from the ''Farley Mowat'' to the ''Robert Hunter'' to build a new helicopter deck. After some time the ''Robert Hunter'' is able to find the ''Nisshin Maru'' and engages it. In the course, one of the Sea Shepherd's small boats with two men on board gets lost. Both Sea Shepherd vessels must abandon the ''Nisshin Maru'', which later takes part in the search for them. Finally after 9 hours, they are able to locate them and they are saved. Having lost the ''Nisshin Maru'', the ''Robert Hunter'' later finds the ''Kaiko Maru'', a spotter vessel for the Japanese whaling fleet. They engage the ship and during maneuvering through an ice field collide with each other, damaging both ships. As the ''Farley Mowat'' approaches, the Japanese vessel calls out a Mayday, stopping the Sea Shepherds from further engagement. As the film ends, we find out that there was a fire on the ''Nisshin Maru'', killing one worker and ending the whaling season early due to damage to the ship.

At the Edge of the World narra la controvertida campaña antártica de Sea Shepherd contra una flota ballenera japonesa. La tripulación de voluntarios internacionales, mal entrenada y mal equipada, desarrolla una combinación de tácticas extrañas y brillantes con las que detener a los balleneros. Pero primero deben encontrar los barcos japoneses, un desafío mucho más difícil de lo que jamás se imaginó: el activista Paul Watson y el capitán novato Alex Cornelissen emplean una serie de estrategias con la esperanza de encontrar un adversario esquivo en la vasta extensión del Mar de Ross. Con un barco (el Farley Mowat) demasiado lento para perseguir a la flota ballenera, con su segundo barco (el Robert Hunter) inadecuado para las condiciones del hielo antártico y sin ningún país que apoye sus esfuerzos para hacer cumplir el derecho internacional, la situación se vuelve cada vez más desesperada. Sin embargo, contra todo pronóstico, se desarrolla una historia de piratas de la vida real: una aventura moderna de "David contra Goliat".
