Seul, un micro sur sa camera, Raymond Depardon a arpente le continent africain de juillet 1993 a fevrier 1996. Il raconte et montre le cap de Bonne-Esperance, Soweto, le Karoo, Johannesburg, l'Angola des hauts plateaux, les camps de refugies du Rwanda et du Burundi, l'Ethiopie, la Somalie, le Soudan... Refusant le silence de la misere, il s'interroge sur sa responsabilite d'homme d'image a parler de la douleur.
