A Perfect World

En 1963, à quelques jours de la visite du président Kennedy à Dallas. Butch Haynes, un criminel récidiviste, s'évade d'un pénitencier en compagnie de Terry Pugh. Les deux hommes prennent en otage Phillip, un petit garçon. Epaulé par une jeune criminologue, le shérif Red Garnett se lance à leurs trousses...

Butch lo sigue y golpea a Pugh para que deje de abusar sexualmente de la madre. Necesitando un rehén para ayudarlos a escapar, Butch agarra al niño, que los acompaña dócilmente. El viaje del trío pronto golpea una nota desagradable cuando Butch mata a Terry, luego del intento de este último de dañar al niño. Con su compañero fuera del camino, el convicto y su joven víctima toman la carretera de Texas en un intento por huir de la policía que los persigue.

Fleeing, Pugh stumbles into a house where eight-year-old Phillip Perry lives with his devout Jehovah's Witness mother and two sisters. Butch follows, and hits Pugh to make him stop molesting the mother. Needing a hostage to aid their escape, Butch grabs the boy, who meekly accompanies them. The trio's journey soon hits an unpleasant note as Butch kills Terry, following the latter's attempt to harm the child. With his partner out of the way, the convict and his young victim take to the Texas highway in a bid to flee from the pursuing police.
