Den röda tråden är 91:ans och 87:ans kamp om Elviras gunst uppblandat med diverse mer eller mindre fantastiska äventyr i och kring förläggningen i Sålunda. Elvira är hembiträde hos major Morgonkröök och 87:an försöker flörta till sig en kopp kaffe hos Elvira. Elvira tvekar av två skäl: för det första kan 91:an -- som är hennes fästman -- komma förbi, för det andra kan major Morgonkröök komma ut i köket. Majoren håller en kamratfest för sina kollegor i ett inre rum
