女子高生が自宅の庭で死亡する事件が起きた。発見したのは少女の母で、事故なのか自殺なのか真相は不明なまま。物語は、悲劇に至るまでの過去を母と娘のそれぞれの視点から振り返っていくが、同じ時間・同じ出来事を回想しているはずなのに、その内容は次第に食い違っていく。

Hiroki Ryuichi’s film is shot through with the spirit of Greek tragedy. It’s the story of Rumiko, who dearly loves her mother Hanae but is unable to feel the same way about her daughter Sayaka. Told from both Rumiko and Sayaka’s perspectives, Motherhood parses the psychology of both women, laying bare the fractures that prevent affection from passing down through the family lineage. It’s a sad story, but one that has room in it for compassion and tenderness amid the harshness.
