Version théâtrale du mythe de Thésée et Phèdre. La protagoniste, d'abord kidnappée puis transformée en reine d'Athènes et épouse de Thésée, héros de héros, avoue à sa nourrice Œnone la passion qu'elle éprouve pour Hippolyte, son beau-fils, pendant l'absence de son mari, porté disparu. Cet amour lui fait honte au point de voir dans le suicide la seule solution.
