明治31年。東京から流れてきた車夫の辰五郎は大阪の駅前で商売を始め、持ち前の気風と度胸の良さで一躍男を売り出すことに。彼は、自分の人力車に客として乗せた人気美人芸者の喜美奴と口げんかになり、車ごと彼女を川の中に放り込んでしまうが、それがかえって縁となってすっかり彼女に惚れ込んでしまう。それを聞いて、ふだん喜美奴をひいきにしていた西川一家の親分・弥三郎は、2人を一緒にさせてやろうと言いだすのだが…。
