2012年、坂本龍一は宮城県名取市で、被災したピアノと出会う。坂本は2011年3月11日の東日本大震災以降、被災地を訪ね歩いてきた。震災から3年を経た2014年3月11日には、自ら防護服を着用して福島第一原発を囲む帰還困難区域に足を踏み入れ、無人の地と化した集落の残像の音に触れた。「見て見ぬふりをするのは僕にはできないこと」と、首相官邸前の原発再稼働反対デモにも参加してスピーチを行った。多方面において精力的に活動していた坂本が、2014年7月に中咽頭ガンを公表する。1年近くに及ぶ闘病生活を経て、第88回アカデミー賞®で3部門を受賞した『レヴェナント：蘇えりし者』(15) と、『母と暮せば』(15) の音楽で復帰した。そして坂本は、新しいアルバムの制作に取り掛かる…。
