Marie s'enfuit de sa province belge à la recherche du bonheur. Sa route semée d'embuche croise rapidement celle de Tonio, le fils du malfrat qu'elle aime. Sans lui apprendre que son père a été tué aux mains de la police, Marie part avec le garçon au Portugal dans l'espoir de retrouver sa mère.
