Characters are often chefs or food connoisseurs, and special attention is given to all steps in the cooking process, ranging from detailed descriptions of recipes to the characters' often over-the-top reactions when tasting the finished product. The genre achieved mainstream popularity in the early 1980s as a result of the "gourmet boom" associated with the Japanese bubble economy.
