-1588년, 변방의 섬나라 영국은 어떻게 세계제국이라 불리던 스페인에게 승리할 수 있었을까? 16세기. 스페인 함대는 오스만해군을 격파한 1571년 레판토 해전이후 아르마다 (무적함대)로 불리고 있었다. 그리고 17년뒤인 1588년! 스페인의 필리페 2세는 영국침공을 결정하고 세계 최강이라는 자부심을 가진 자신의 함대를 영국으로 파견한다. 유럽은 숨을 죽였다. 만약 영국해군이 아르마다에게 패배한다면 유럽 최강의 스페인 육군이 영국에 상륙할 것이고, 엘리자베스의 영국은 끝장이 날 것이다. 그러나 전투결과는 어이없을 정도로 싱거웠다. 아르마다의 참패로 끝난 것이다. 어떻게 세계최강의 함대가 17년만에 허약한 함대로 변한 것일까? 어떻게 변방의 소국 영국은 세계제국이라 불리던 스페인에게 승리할 수 있었을까?
