Mario is a media franchise, published and produced by video game company Nintendo, created by Japanese game designer Shigeru Miyamoto and starring the fictional character Mario.
Video games were exploding in popularity in the 1980s. Characters from several of the more popular games were featured in "Saturday Supercade," a weekly cartoon series perhaps most notable for being Donkey Kong's first starring appearance in a cartoon series. The famous gorilla starred in his own segment, this time as a well-meaning but slow-witted (and sometimes easily manipulated) gorilla who had escaped the circus; his trainer, Mario, and then-girlfriend Pauline (of whom Donkey Kong had a huge crush), tried to capture the large ape. Other segments included "Donkey Kong Jr.," the famous gorilla's young son who was aided in his search by his human friend, Bones; "Frogger," about an investigative amphibious reporter for the Swamp Gazette; "Pitfall," featuring the adventures of Pitfall Harry, his pet mountain lion Quickclaw and his niece Rhonda as they traveled through the forest in search of treasure; and "Q*Bert," about the misadventures of a teen-aged orange creature. The latter two segments were shown on alternate weeks during the first season. During the show's second season, only "Donkey Kong" and "Q*Bert" returned. Two new segments included "Kangaroo," about a young mother kangaroo and her son, Joey, who were constantly harassed by a quartet of mischievous monkeys; and "Space Ace," a teen-ager who fought aliens plotting to invade Earth

Donkey Kong Jr. is sad to find that his father is running away from Mario and the circus. He befriends a greaser nicknamed "Bones" who has a motorcycle and offers to help Junior by finding his dad together.
Brothers Mario and Luigi were two plumbers from Brooklyn. On one of their plumbing jobs, they were in the middle of unclogging a bathtub drainpipe. Without any warning, the drain suddenly pulled the brothers in, and warped them to the Mushroom Kingdom. Upon their arrival, they rescued Princess Toadstool and Toad from King Koopa and his army. Although Princess Toadstool and Toad are now safe, the Koopas are still at large. On top of that, the warp zone leading to Brooklyn had closed. It's up to Mario and Luigi to not only liberate the Mushroom World from King Koopa, but to find a way back to Brooklyn.
Everyone thought King Koopa had left the Mushroom Kingdom. Then his Doom Ship attacked! King Koopa is back with the greatest danger ever known: his Koopa kids. Using their new powers, the Super Mario Brothers must rescue Princess Toadstool and beat back the evil Koopa family.
US magician John Lenahan dressed as Mario, hosts a UK game show in front of live studio kid audience where two kid contestants compete by playing one of the three popular Super Mario games at the time. They win tokens and prestige. The Super Mario Challenge was a show which aired on television from 1990-1991. The show was only aired in the United Kingdom and not in the United States as The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! was airing around that time in the US. It was hosted by Mario himself, played by John Lenahan. Each night, the show had two guest players, who would have to play various Mario games, such as Super Mario Bros. or Super Mario Bros. 3. The two players would compete to see who could get the most Coins on a level, or who could finish the level in the fastest time
1991年（平成3年）にバンダイから、同社が展開していた幼児向け知育玩具「てれびっこ」対応のVHSビデオソフトとして、『スーパーマリオワールド』の物語を30分のアニメにまとめたOVAが発売された。てれびっこ本体をテレビと接続することでマリオ達が出題するクイズに参加できる。マリオとルイージの声優は、以前の劇場版アニメ『スーパーマリオブラザーズ ピーチ姫救出大作戦!』と同じく、マリオを古谷徹、ルイージを水島裕が演じている。ただしキャラクターデザインや性格、設定などは劇場版よりもゲーム版に近くなっており、マリオとルイージの話し方、一人称も異なっていた。 なお、てれびっこの機器が無くても、普通のアニメビデオとして観賞が可能である。
