During the Bosnian War, United States Navy flight officer Lieutenant Chris Burnett and pilot Lieutenant Jeremy Stackhouse, who are stationed on the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) in the Adriatic Sea, are assigned an aerial reconnaissance mission by their commanding officer, Admiral Reigart. The mission goes smoothly until they spot suspicious activity in the demilitarized zone where NATO aircraft and the warring factions are prohibited from engaging in military activity. Burnett persuades Stackhouse to fly their Boeing F/A-18F Super Hornet off-course to get a close look and photograph the target. They are unaware that they photographed mass graves, and Serb paramilitaries see the jet. The local Republika Srpska (1992–95) paramilitary commander, General Miroslav Lokar, is conducting a secret genocidal campaign against the local Bosniak population. Not wanting the mass graves to be discovered, Lokar orders the jet be shot down.
The story is not linked to the first part of the series. Instead, it focuses on a fictional explanation for the Ryanggang explosion in 2004, in which an unexplained mushroom cloud occurred in North Korea.
Colombia is in chaos, as a five-man team of United States Navy SEALs embark on a secret mission to ensure that peace talks between the country's government and Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia don't erupt into violence, an unforeseen complication threatens all-out war. Out of nowhere, the meeting falls under attack and the leaders from both sides are killed. The SEALs have been framed for the crime, leaving them to fight for their lives from behind enemy lines against the Agrupación de Fuerzas Especiales Antiterroristas Urbanas. Abandoned by their government and left for dead, the weary soldiers race to uncover the evidence that will prove their innocence while ensuring that the violence is contained. Should the fighting spill over the border, the entire region or both sides could be plunged into a nightmarish inferno of war and death.
