US Nightly News
The CBS Evening News is a TV institution, having some of the most well-known journalists in the world anchor it through its many decades on the air. It's currently anchored by Norah O'Donnell, who took over for Jeff Glor in July 2019. The half hour show covers both international and domestic news.
NBC Nightly News is the daily evening news program for NBC News and broadcasts from the GE Building, Rockefeller Center in New York City.
Harry Reasoner and Howard K. Smith had co-anchored the ABC Evening News from December 1970. In 1975, Reasoner assumed sole anchor responsibilities until his pairing with Barbara Walters, the first female network anchor, in Oct. 1976. On July 10, 1978, Roone Arledge, head of ABC's news and sports divisions, launched World News Tonight with a trio of anchors -- Frank Reynolds, Peter Jennings, and the late Max Robinson. From 1983 to 2005, the program was anchored by Peter Jennings. Following Jennings' death, Elizabeth Vargas and Bob Woodruff were named as co-anchors. Woodruff was severely wounded in January 2006 while reporting from Iraq. Vargas stepped down for maternity leave in May 2006 and Charles Gibson was named as permanent anchor. David Muir took over for Diane Sawyer on September 1, 2014 as permanent and sole anchor.
PBS NewsHour is the long running news magazine broadcast every weeknight on PBS. The show was created by veteran newsmen Robert MacNeil & Jim Lehrer, and has been on the air since 1975. In 2009, the show, previously known as The NewsHour With Jim Lehrer, became PBS NewsHour. One of the major differences between network news and the PBS NewsHour is that because the show is publicly funded, there are no commercials. This allows the NewsHour to dedicate more time to comprehensive reporting. The nightly broadcast features a two-anchor format, with a rotation of NEWSHOUR senior correspondents Gwen Ifill, Judy Woodruff and Jeffrey Brown. Senior correspondents Margaret Warner and Ray Suarez deliver compelling original reporting & newsmaker interviews from the field. Correspondent Hari Sreenivasan delivers news to the digital world and anchors the news summary on the television broadcasts.
